Flood threat prompts evacuations in Canada

CALGARY, Alberta, June 7 (UPI) -- The mayor of Calgary sought emergency aid as hundreds of residents prepared to evacuate in western Canada amid threats of more flooding.

Crews continued cleaning up from Tuesday night's torrential storms and flash floods that collapsed three structures and closed nine major roads, The Calgary Sun reported Thursday.

"We don't know what the damage is now, it'll take days for that -- a lot of public infrastructure was damaged, not to mention private property," said Mayor Dave Bronconnier. Parts of Alberta province got more than the normal monthly rainfall for June this week.

Meanwhile, hundreds evacuated homes along the Fraser River in neighboring British Columbia. The river was expected to crest this weekend. Forecasters said more rain would only add to the problems caused by swollen rivers and streams.

Provincial officials said flooding in the Lower Mainland remains a threat and issued evacuation alerts for parts of Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Maple Ridge because of the danger, the Vancouver Sun said.

States of emergency were declared in seven regions and B.C. officials trucked 3.6 million sandbags to local communities.
