Earthquake kills three in China

KUNMING, China, June 3 (UPI) -- At least three people were reported killed and 290 injured Sunday in an earthquake in southwest China's Yunnan Province.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale, reported Xinhua, the Chinese news agency.

The early morning quake destroyed buildings and roads in the old downtown area of Hani and Yi Autonomous County of Ning'er, in Pu'er City, the China Earthquake Administration said.

About 120,000 people were evacuated from their homes and area coal workers were ordered out of the mines, Xinhua reported.

The area, which borders Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar, has experienced 20 earthquakes above a magnitude of 5.0 since 1990.
