Bush immigration plan tests base

WASHINGTON, June 3 (UPI) -- U.S. President Bush's support of an immigration overhaul has caused intense criticism from staunch conservatives who have stood by him during tough times.

Those supporters view him as seeking amnesty for immigrant lawbreakers when he should focus on border security, The New York Times reported Sunday.

"I think President Bush hurts himself every time he says it is not amnesty," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla. "We are not all that stupid."

Postings this week on conservative Web sites went so far as to call for impeaching Bush after he said those opposing the congressional plan "don't want to do what's right for America," the Times reported.

Karl Rove, Bush's top adviser, said he remains confident Bush will win over critics when they learn more about the bill and understand the administration's continuing efforts to enforce existing border control laws.
