Dozens of inmates injured in prison brawl

BALTIMORE, June 2 (UPI) -- A Maryland prison remained locked down Saturday, the day after at least 18 inmates were seriously hurt when two groups of prisoners clashed.

Dozen of other inmates received minor injuries when the fight erupted Friday in an exercise yard at the Metropolitan Transition Center in Baltimore, The (Baltimore) Sun reported.

No corrections officers were injured. Several handmade knives were recovered afterward.

Prison officials said they had no information how the fight started, whether it was gang-related or how many were in the yard.

Unnamed corrections officials said it was not unusual for more than 100 inmates to be in the prison yard at one time, with as few as two or three unarmed guards circulating among them while guards with weapons watched from the walls and towers, The Sun reported.

The minimum-security prison's 1,732 inmates were confined to their cells Saturday, and were denied visitation and other privileges.
