Calif. may hold referendum on Iraq

SACRAMENTO, June 2 (UPI) -- Californians may vote in November on whether they support an immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.

The state Senate Rules Committee approved a bill authorizing the vote this week, The New York Times reported. The Legislature is expected to vote on it soon, and, with Democratic majorities in both houses, it is likely to pass.

If the resolution gets on the ballot, California would become the first state to hold such a vote. The vote would have no immediate practical effect, although it might put pressure on presidential candidates campaigning in California to define their positions.

California's last resolution on foreign policy was 25 years ago, when voters supported nuclear disarmament by 52 percent to 48 percent.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has said that he will only announce his position on the bill when it passes the state Legislature, the newspaper said.
