BAGHDAD, June 1 (UPI) -- U.S. and British military officials in Iraq have met secretly with an Iraqi insurgent group that has bragged about attacks on U.S. troops, ABC News reported.
The meetings with the Sunni group the 1920s Revolution Brigade are part of an effort to negotiate with Iraqi insurgents.
"You name a mainstream insurgent group, and we're talking to them," a source told ABC.
U.S. commander Lt. Gen. Raymond Odierno has estimated 80 percent of insurgent Iraqis can be persuaded to stop their attacks, ABC reported.
The effort, which also involves the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, has not included members of the al-Qaida terror network.
"I believe little, very few, of al-Qaida are reconcilable. But there might be a small portion," Odierno told a Pentagon briefing.
The 1920s Revolution Brigade has claimed responsibility for several attacks against U.S. soldiers, including one three weeks ago.
