NEW YORK, May 27 (UPI) -- A U.S. citizen has become the first person extradited from Britain on terrorism charges and will stand trial in New York, CNN reported Sunday.
Syed Hashmi, 27, was arrested in June 2006 at London's Heathrow Airport.
"This is the first extradition on terrorism charges from the United Kingdom, and it has yielded a defendant who provided material support to al-Qaida," said Michael Garcia, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.
A federal indictment says the former resident of the New York borough, Queens, allegedly conspired to transport "military gear" to al-Qaida forces fighting U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
He was arrested as he prepared to board a flight to Pakistan carrying a large amount of cash. Hashmi also is charged with conspiring to supply other members of al-Qaida in Pakistan. Federal prosecutors did not say what materials or services Hashmi allegedly provided to al-Qaida.
If convicted, Hashmi could be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison. His arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday.
