NEW YORK, May 26 (UPI) -- Federal officials are recommending planes be barred from New York's East River corridor where Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle was killed in a plane crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board told the FAA it should make permanent the temporary ban on small planes that was instituted immediately after Lidle's aircraft struck a high-rise building last fall.

The NTSB said Lidle and his instructor misjudged a U-turn in the narrow corridor and didn't have enough time to take corrective action.

The FAA had no immediate comment on the recommendation. Specifically, the NTSB proposal would ban aircraft except for seaplanes and helicopters, and would require planes to get special permission from air-traffic controllers before entering the corridor.

New York Newsday said that by adopting the restriction, the FAA would require it to be noted on official FAA charts.
