U.S. court mulls Polish man's extradition

WARSAW, Poland, May 25 (UPI) -- A Justice Ministry official in Warsaw promised a Polish-American businessman would have a fair trial if a U.S. court sends him to Poland.

Anna Adamiak, in charge of the extradition procedure at the Polish Justice Ministry, said businessman Edward A. Mazur would stand fair trial under high democratic standards in Poland, Polish Radio reported Friday.

Polish prosecutors have charged Mazur with organizing the killing of Gen. Marek Papala, chief of Poland's national police. An unidentified gunman, reportedly paid $40,000, killed Papala outside his Warsaw home in 1998.

Defense attorney Chris Gair told a U.S. court hearing Mazur's trial in Poland would be unfair, the radio said.

In October in the United States, FBI agents arrested Mazur, who holds both Polish and U.S. citizenship, on Poland's request and extradition proceedings have been under way since.
