Litvinenko suspect may be tried in Russia

MOSCOW, May 25 (UPI) -- The man British authorities say killed former KGB agent Alexander Litvinenko may be tried in Russia, the prosecutor general said Friday.

Yuri Chaika, who was in Munich for a meeting of Group of Eight ministers, said the Crown Prosecution Service must provide adequate evidence against Andrei Luguvoi, Itar-Tass reported. Luguvoi, now a businessman, was formerly a bodyguard for the Federal Security Service or FSB, the KGB's successor.

Litvinenko, who was living in Britain, died last year from polonium poisoning. While he was dying in a London hospital, he blamed Russian President Vladimir Putin for his death.

Earlier this week, Britain asked Russia to extradite Luguvoi. But officials say that is not possible.

Chaika said he has not received official reports yet on how Litvinenko died nor on the investigation into his death, Novosti reported.
