UPI Poll: Trade, jobs top China issues

WASHINGTON, May 24 (UPI) -- The U.S.-China trade imbalance and China's growth as an economic force top concerns of respondents to a UPI-Zogby International poll.

The 5,141 U.S. participants in a Zogby interactive poll were asked a series of questions related to China. In looking at Sino-U.S. economic issues, the China trade surplus -- $17.2 billion in March -- received the most mention, named by 29.3 percent of those asked.

China's growing global presence as an economic power was second at 21.2 percent with "loss of U.S. jobs/competition with U.S. companies" third at 12.8 percent and ideological difference between the U.S. and Chinese governments next at 9.4 percent.

Concern over human rights in China came in fifth (7.3 percent) followed by China as a military threat (7.2 percent).

The poll, which carries a margin of error of 1.4 percentage points, was conducted May 16-18.
