Bush supports Iraq, immigration bills

WASHINGTON, May 24 (UPI) -- U.S. President George W. Bush on Thursday pushed for passage for measures regarding Iraq war funding and immigration reform.

Bush said the war funding measure before the U.S. Congress this week should win passage without timetables for U.S. military withdrawal. He also said the bill, as compared to the one he recently vetoed, removed millions of dollars in unrelated funding.

"As it provides vital funds for our troops, this bill also reflects a consensus that the Iraqi government needs to show real progress in return for America's continued support and sacrifice," the president said in a news conference at the White House Rose Garden.

Bush has said he supports the immigration compromise introduced last week by a group of U.S. senators. The bill, however, has met opposition from both the political left and right.

This is "a complex issue, a difficult piece of legislation that those who are looking to find fault with this will bill will always be able to find something," Bush said.

But, he said, it "fixes an immigration system we all agree is broken."
