Study: U.S. Muslims satisfied with life

WASHINGTON, May 22 (UPI) -- A Pew Research Center survey of U.S. Muslims finds that a majority of respondents is content with their lives and rejects extremism and terrorism.

The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press reports that 65 percent of Muslims in the country were born overseas. About half of U.S.-born Muslims are black, many of them converts.

While a majority of those surveyed said their communities are good places to live and 71 percent said they believe that anyone can succeed in the United States with hard work, 53 percent of U.S. Muslims surveyed said that they have been less accepted since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

More than half said Muslims should adapt to U.S. society and two-thirds said they believe they can be devout Muslims while doing so, the Pew survey revealed.

The report said that Muslims in the United States are less likely than those in Europe and elsewhere to support terrorist actions. Support for al-Qaida was slightly higher among black Muslims and younger Muslims are more likely to believe that suicide bombing is sometimes justifiable.

The Pew survey was based on a sample of more than 1,050 people, culled from 55,000 interviews conducted in English, Arabic, Farsi and Urdu.
