WASHINGTON, May 22 (UPI) -- The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee brought in more than twice as much money in April as its Republican counterpart.

On the other side of Congress, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee raised less than the Republican equivalent for the first time since January, The Hill reported.

The DSCC has been consistent during the current fundraising cycle, bringing in about twice what the National Republican Senatorial Committee has in every month. In April, the Democrats raised $4.6 million and the Republicans $2.1 million.

During the entire cycle, the Democrats have raised $18.3 million and the Republicans $9.1 million. Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, who is chairman of the Republican committee, has a goal of $118 million for the cycle but is not on track for it.

"We are building a solid foundation for the 2008 election cycle, and we will keep working to improve on our success," DSCC spokesman Matthew Miller said. "Voters are embracing Democratic ideas, and it is translating to a dramatic lead in fundraising."
