KUNDUZ, Afghanistan, May 22 (UPI) -- German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier arrived in a northern Afghanistan town Tuesday where Taliban insurgents killed three German soldiers.
Speaking at the base in Kunduz where about 400 German soldiers are stationed as part of the NATO mission, Steinmeier said the weekend bombing should not deter international resolve, Deutsche Welle reported.
"Terror threatens us everywhere and there is no absolute protection against terrorist attacks, this we had to learn in a very painful way," Steinmeier said.
The bombers struck a market area Saturday. Five Afghan civilians were injured along with five German soldiers.
Germany has 3,000 soldiers in northern Afghanistan as part of NATO's 37-nation International Security Assistance Force. The latest deaths bring Germany's military death toll to 21 since 2002.
Steinmeier later flew to Kabul for a meeting with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, and was scheduled to fly to Pakistan on Wednesday for talks with President Pervez Musharraf.
