BAGHDAD, May 21 (UPI) -- U.S. troops have broken up an Iraqi insurgent ring that staged a series of attacks on U.S. helicopters that killed 23 soldiers, an Army aviation officer said.

Maj. Gen. James Simmons said the network of insurgents targeted by the U.S. military was responsible for a string of January and February helicopter attacks in Iraq, USA Today reported.

Simmons did not say when a raid and subsequent air assault of the insurgents' ambush site occurred. Fewer than 100 insurgents were killed or captured in the operation, he said.

"I don't think they anticipated our rapid and very capable response to them," he told USA Today.

In January and February, six U.S. military helicopters were shot down, killing 23 soldiers. There have been no fatal helicopter attacks since, the newspaper reported.
