WASHINGTON, May 20 (UPI) -- Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is sending letters to the president and vice president seeking to widen an inquiry into Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
"Look, the bottom line is the only person who thinks the attorney general should remain attorney general is the president," Schumer told Fox News Sunday. "He's gotten virtually no support from even Republicans in the Senate."
Schumer, co-sponsor of a no-confidence resolution on Gonzales, wants to know who ordered then-White House counsel Gonzales, and former White House chief of staff Andrew Card to go to former attorney general John Ashcroft's hospital room to ask him to renew the administration's warrantless wiretapping program. The ailing Ashcroft refused.
The 2004 incident came to light last week in testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee by former acting attorney general James Comey.
Schumer said his letters would go to President George Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and David Addington, Cheney's chief of staff, asking if they sent Gonzales or know who did.
Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., said he doesn't believe there's any evidence of illegal behavior on Gonzales' part.
