British soldiers accused of abuse in Iraq

LONDON, May 18 (UPI) -- Britain's High Court is to hear new allegations that the British army tortured Iraqi civilians, it was reported Friday.

British army soldiers are accused of war crimes against alleged members of Iraq's Baath party in the aftermath of the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, reported the Independent.

A former chairman of the Red Crescent in Basra claimed he was beaten unconscious by British soldiers who accused him of being a senior official in the Baath party. Relatives of another Iraqi civilian alleged he was kidnapped by the British and later found shot dead, handcuffed and wearing a U.K. prisoner name tag, the Independent said.

Last month, one British soldier was sentenced to a year in prison after being convicted of mistreating Iraqi civilians. Six other British soldiers were cleared of all charges.
