Bulgaria confiscates 220 pounds of heroin

SOFIA, Bulgaria, May 17 (UPI) -- Bulgarian customs officers seized 220 pounds of heroin when they stopped a Bulgarian truck at the border with Turkey, Sofia media said Thursday.

Customs inspectors and a special anti-drug team with dogs uncovered 127 packs of heroin hidden in spare tires of the truck that was trying to enter Bulgaria at the southeastern border check point of Lesovo, the Bulgarian Web site news.bg said.

Inspectors said the black market value of the heroin amounted to $6.8 million.

Bulgaria is on a major Balkan route for smuggling drugs and people to Western Europe.
