NEW YORK, May 16 (UPI) -- The U.S. envoy to the United Nations said he will introduce a draft resolution for trying the alleged perpetrators of a 2005 assassination in Lebanon.
Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said the United States will introduce a draft U.N. Security Council resolution for the trial of suspects in the car-bomb killing of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and 22 others as early as this week, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
Khalilzad made his statements one day after current Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora appealed to the Security Council for help in breaking a standoff over the creation of an international court for the trial.
The investigation into the February 2005 assassination has led to the implication of many high-ranking officials, including some linked to Syrian President Bashar Assad.
"It's very important that people who have participated in political murder be brought to justice," Khalilzad said. "We understand that there are some risks with regard to taking action, but we believe the risks of not taking action are greater."
