LONDON, May 16 (UPI) -- A British Army official confirmed Wednesday that Prince Harry will not serve in Iraq following a spate of threats regarding the royal's deployment there.
Gen. Sir Richard Dannatt, chief of the general staff, said Harry will forgo his military service in the war-torn Middle Eastern nation after evidence of numerous militant threats aimed specifically at the prince arose, the BBC reported.
"Following a visit to Iraq last week I discovered a number of threats relating directly to Prince Harry and those around him and I am not prepared to export those risks," Dannatt said.
The prince had planned on shipping out to Iraq with his military unit, the Blues and Royals, to fulfill his wish to endure active duty with his fellow soldiers.
The general said he recognized the precautionary measure would likely be disappointing for Harry and his military unit.
"I know Prince Harry will be extremely disappointed and his soldiers will miss his presence in Iraq," Dannatt told the BBC.
"I've asked his commanding officer to develop his future career but I won't speculate on that."
