BAGHDAD, May 15 (UPI) -- Police in Iraq began enforcing a new policy limiting media coverage of terrorist bombings on Tuesday as they prevented coverage of a Baghdad explosion.
Reporters on the scene of Tuesday's bombing in the Iraqi capital told the Arabic satellite TV network Alalam police fired their guns in the air to drive the media away from the site.
Interior Ministry official Brig. Gen. Abdel Karim Khalaf announced the new security measure last weekend, citing evidence preservation and victim privacy as part of the rationale for the decision.
The operations director also denied allegations the limited media coverage was a move towards regulating freedom of the press.
Khalaf also told Alalam limiting the media's presence at bombing sites would prevent those behind the attacks from measuring their success.
