OSLO, Norway, May 15 (UPI) -- Experts in Norway confirmed this week that a shipwreck discovered by a trio of divers six months ago was a well-preserved wreck of a medieval ship.
Diver Reidar Harjo Johansen of the Mjosen Diver Club said that when he located the wreck a half year ago with two fellow divers, he immediately saw that it was a delicate aged maritime vessel, Aftenposten said Tuesday.
"We saw something that looked like a Christmas tree. There have surely been other divers who saw it before and thought it was garbage," he said.
The diving trio then contacted an official at an area maritime museum about their discovery.
On Monday that discovery was proven to be the remains of a medieval vessel, an announcement that museum official Arne Julsrud Berg called "a sensation."
"In my view this is a sensation. Finding a medieval shipwreck so well preserved is very rare in a Nordic context," Julsrud Berg said.
Aftenposten said the ship appeared to have been a limestone transport vessel used sometime between 1470-1570.
