KABUL, Afghanistan, May 14 (UPI) -- A Taliban spokesman confirmed the killing of top commander Mullah Dadullah in Afghanistan, China's official Xinhua news agency reported Monday.

The report said Taher Afghan, described as a Taliban spokesman, spoke to the news agency from an undisclosed place.

"It was the first time that the Taliban confirmed the death of Dadullah," Xinhua said. The report gave no other details.

Other reports said the top Taliban military commander was killed in southern Afghanistan's Helmand Province.

The Afghan government said Dadullah was killed Friday in a joint Afghan army-police operation backed by NATO support, CNN reported. His body was identified by a partial missing leg.
