KABUL, Afghanistan, May 13 (UPI) -- The Taliban's top military commander has been killed in southern Afghanistan's Helmand Province, it was reported Sunday.
Mullah Dadullah died Friday in a joint Afghan army-police operation backed by NATO support, said the Aghan government. NATO had yet to confirm Dadullah's death, CNN reported Sunday.
Dadullah, an amputee whose corpse was identified by a partial missing leg, died from a gunshot wound to the head and stomach, CNN reported.
Dadullah was believed responsible for numerous assassinations and was believed to be behind many suicide bombings against Afghans. The elusive commander organized fighters, weapons and finances across much of the south and southeast of Afghanistan, CNN reported.
"We are happy he is not alive anymore," government spokesman Khaleeq Ahmad told CNN Sunday.
