Prodigy, 21, about to become doctor
NEW YORK, May 13 (UPI) -- The chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee has criticized the New York Police Department for overstepping its boundaries.
The New York Daily News reported on comments made by Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss.
"While I understand that chasing down leads in other locales might help keep the city safe, I emphasized that the NYPD is not the FBI, that it does not have national jurisdiction," Thompson told the News.
Thompson criticized the NYPD for conducting counterterrorism surveillance beyond New York's boundaries. He said he is especially concerned with the NYPD's handling of the 2004 Republican National Convention.
While he agreed that New York is a main target for terrorists, Thompson -- who was once mayor of a small Mississippi town -- urged the NYPD to stick to policing the city.
