MomsRising.org gives voice to U.S. mothers

WASHINGTON, May 13 (UPI) -- Mothers across the United States have found a new way to voice their concerns on public policy, through MomsRising.org.

With more than 90,000 registered members, the organization gives ordinary mothers a chance to band together and push for significant policy changes in areas that affect them, The Washington Post said Sunday.

The group typically focuses its efforts on parental issues such as health insurance, child care and wages.

"We have a 1950s support structure -- with 72 percent of mothers in the labor force," group co-founder Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner said. "It's time for our policies and programs to catch up with our modern economy."

The Post said MomsRising.org won its first major battle recently by successfully urging Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire to sign a mandate allowing working parents to receive paid family leave.
