TBILISI, Georgia, May 11 (UPI) -- South Ossetia authorities blocked the Transcaucasian highway Friday and said the action will continue until Georgia removes unsanctioned police posts.

Leaders of South Ossetia said they have repeatedly asked Georgian authorities to stop the illegal checking and registration of their citizens, Russia's Itar-Tass news agency reported Friday.

"The blocking of settlements on the Transcaucasian highway will continue until Georgia withdraws to its territory all of the armed formations which are staying there in violation of earlier accords," South Ossetian President Eduard Kokoity said.

Russian peacekeepers in the conflict zone have been put on alert, RIA Novosti said.

The commander of the peacekeeping forces told the Russian news service the situation in the conflict zone is tense.

Last November South Ossetia held a presidential election along with a referendum to reaffirm its independence.

Georgia is seeking to regain control over the region.
