ABOARD THE USS JOHN C. STENNIS, May 11 (UPI) -- U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney told troops in the Persian Gulf Friday that the American people don't want to bring them home before their work is done.

"I want you to know that the American people do not support a policy of retreat. We want to complete the mission, get it done right, and return with honor," Cheney told 3,500 to 4,000 of the 5,000 sailors who serve aboard the USS John C. Stennis in a speech delivered about 22 miles off the coast of the United Arab Emirates.

Friday was Cheney's third day in the Gulf region. He has also visited with U.S. troops in Iraq.

Cheney, standing in front of two F/A-18C Hornet fighter jets, said the United States' two carrier groups in the Persian Gulf are "sending clear messages to friends and adversaries alike. ...We'll stand with others to prevent Iran from gaining nuclear weapons and dominating the region."
