LONDON, May 11 (UPI) -- Gordon Brown began his campaign to become Britain's next prime minister by praising outgoing Prime Minister Tony Blair but saying he would govern differently.
"Today there are new priorities and I offer a new leadership for this new time," Brown, currently the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, told Labor Party activists gathered in London Friday, the Telegraph reported.
Brown also spoke of Blair's "distinction courage, passion and insight," the newspaper reported.
Blair endorsed Brown.
"I'm absolutely delighted to give my full support to Gordon as the next leader of the Labor Party and prime minister and to endorse him fully," Blair said.
"I think he has got what it takes to lead the Labor Party, and indeed the country, with distinction. He is an extraordinary and rare talent and it's a tremendous thing if it's put at the service of the nation as it now can be," he said.
