CHICAGO, May 10 (UPI) -- A gunman wounded five teenage passengers on a Chicago city bus Thursday afternoon.

One of the victims was critically hurt, the Chicago Tribune reported. Witnesses told the newspaper that all appeared to be high-school age and some were girls.

The shooting occurred on the South Side, one of Chicago's poorest neighborhoods.

Assistant Deputy Superintendent Eugene Williams said the shooter had been on the bus for about 15 minutes before he opened fire. The driver pulled over, and the shooter got off and ran away.
