All quiet in Timor-Leste presidential vote

DILI, Timor-Leste, May 9 (UPI) -- Voters in Timor-Leste are choosing a new president they hope will end violence in the troubled Pacific nation.

In a run-off election Nobel Peace Prize winner Jose Ramos-Horta, an independent candidate, is pitted against the ruling Fretilin party's Francisco Guterres after neither gained a majority in first round polling last month.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported from Dili security was tight for the election amid concerns supporters of the losing candidate could ignite unrest in Timor-Leste, which has been racked by violence since independence in 2002 after its bloody separation from Indonesia.

An Australian-led U.N. peacekeeping force of 2,400 troops and police units patrolled the main centers and voting proceeded quietly.

Ramos-Horta is favored to win the presidency after gaining the support of most of the other six losing first-round candidates.
