Poll: Public rejects Iraq funding veto

WASHINGTON, May 8 (UPI) -- A majority of Americans oppose President George W. Bush's veto of a war funding bill that called for U.S. troops to leave Iraq next year, a new poll found.

The CNN poll released Tuesday found that 54 percent of those polled said they opposed the veto, while 44 percent said they supported Bush's decision to veto the $124 billion Iraq war funding measure.

Fifty-seven percent said they want Congress to send Bush another funding bill containing a timetable for withdrawal, while 61 percent said they would support a bill that does not include timetables but does require Iraq to meet so-called benchmarks to maintain U.S. support.

The poll found that more Americans said Congress, rather than the president, has the responsibility for setting policy in Iraq. However, the percentage of those who say Democratic Party control of Congress is good for the country fell to 51 percent from 59 percent in March.

The poll CNN, surveyed 1,028 U.S. adults between Friday and Sunday, and has a sampling error of 3 percent.
