May Day marches for immigration rights

LOS ANGELES, May 1 (UPI) -- Police warned the public to avoid downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday as organizers readied for May Day marches for immigrant and labor rights.

Police said they were preparing for 100,000 marchers at the events, which they warned would stop traffic, mass transit and some businesses, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Organizers of a Tuesday morning march called for a work, school and business boycott.

Los Angeles Police said at least 1,000 officers -- "maximum deployment" -- will report to duty Tuesday morning, the Times reported.

"Everyone who can work will be working. Everyone who can be in uniform will be in uniform. All our detectives and sworn support personnel will be available to go out," Capt. Andy Smith told the Times.

Organizers for the morning march and another planned for later Tuesday said they didn't expect the large turnout police were preparing for.

When the U.S. Congress did not pass legislation that would have criminalized illegal immigrants, many would-be protesters lost their motivation to march, organizers told the Times.
