SAN DIEGO, April 30 (UPI) -- Police broke up a cockfight, seizing 35 roosters and arresting one juvenile and four adults during the raid of a home in Ramona, Calif.

The San Diego Union-Tribune said authorities in the California town raided the home Sunday afternoon as the cockfight was taking place inside and arrested five individuals, including the property's owners. Others escaped when police approached the property.

Sheriff's Lt. William Donahue told the newspaper, "When deputies arrived, a whole bunch of people fled from the house."

He said the 35 animals confiscated in the raid where euthanized by area Animal Control officials.
