MOSCOW, April 29 (UPI) -- The Russian government on Sunday condemned a United Nations resolution on the status of Serbia's independence-seeking predominately Albanian province of Kosovo.
"The (investigative) mission has found many blind spots and confirmed the conclusion that despite relative progress in the social and administrative sphere, the situation with the fulfillment of the key provisions of Resolution No. 1244 and international standards in Kosovo cannot be recognized as satisfactory," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Russia, which holds a permanent seat on the 15-member U.N. Security Council, is an ally with the Serbian government in Belgrade, and said it wasn't happy with a recommendation made by U.N. special envoy Martti Ahtisaari, which would eventually grant Kosovo the independence sought by its Albanian Muslim majority.
The European Union and the United States have backed Ahtisaari's call for an autonomous Kosovar state.
