BRUSSELS, April 28 (UPI) -- The European Union's foreign policy chief Javier Solana says Iran would welcome direct talks with the United States over Iran's nuclear program.

Speaking in Brussels, Solana recounted talks he had this week in Turkey with Iranian negotiator Ali Larijani, and said there was "some potential motion" toward Iran's willingness to negotiate on its disputed uranium enrichment program.

The Bush administration has said it will not enter talks as long as Tehran continues the process, which Iran claims is solely for power generation and not building nuclear weapons.

"I think that at this point in time to have also the United States open a channel of communication with Iran will be worth thinking about," Solana said.

U.S. assistant Secretary of State Daniel Fried attended the meeting, and said Solana's remarks weren't likely to hold much sway in Washington, the BBC reported.

"Our position at the moment is well-known ... so we are stuck," Fried said.

Solana and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice are scheduled to meet on Sunday on the stand-off.
