Prodigy, 21, about to become doctor
BLACKSBURG, Va., April 26 (UPI) -- Law enforcement authorities say Virginia Tech shooter Cho Seung-hui fired 170 bullets in a 9-minute span in killing 30 people.
Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said Cho was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound when police reached him in a Norris Hall classroom alongside some of his victims.
Flinchum and Virginia State Police Superintendent Col. Steve Flaherty said the new details in a news conference Wednesday -- 10 days after the shooting -- would mark their final public briefing on the massacre.
Authorities said they believe Cho killed two people at a dormitory, took time to mail off a package containing a manifesto and then headed to another campus building where he killed 30 people before shooting himself.
Flinchum stopped short of confirming that Cho killed Emily Hilscher and Ryan Clark inside the West Ambler Johnston residence hall after a witness saw him outside the building, but he did confirm that the two victims were killed by bullets from Cho's weapon.
"As far as his actions inside the building, we're still trying to figure out what he did," Flinchum said.
Flaherty said investigators did not yet know how long Cho was planning the attack and they are still seeking a specific motive for the killings.
"He appears in my humble opinion to have been a troubled individual," Flaherty said.
