Black Caucus split on Fox debate

WASHINGTON, April 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. Congressional Black Caucus is split on whether to withdraw from its agreement with Fox News to sponsor a Democratic presidential debate.

The debate is set for Sept. 23 in Detroit and the caucus is evenly divided on whether to withdraw, U.S. Rep. Lacy Clay, D-Mo., told The Hill, a Washington newspaper

"It's split," Clay said. "Half think that because we started down the path, we should stay."

Democratic candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.; former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C.; and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., have withdrawn from the debate, saying Fox News has a conservative bias.

The caucus and Fox are sponsoring the debate through the Congressional

Black Caucus Political Education and Leadership Institute. The Institute is not formally affiliated with the caucus but is significantly influenced by caucus members, the newspaper The Hill reported Wednesday.
