No Serbian Cabinet 3 months after polls

BELGRADE, Serbia, April 24 (UPI) -- Three months after parliamentary elections, Serbia's parties have less than three weeks to forge out a new government or call a new vote.

If new elections are called, the Serbian government of incumbent Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica could remain in power until November, Belgrade's B92 radio said Tuesday.

No single party won at least 51 percent of the seats in parliamentary elections in January and all negotiations among various parties to form a coalition Cabinet have failed.

If no coalition with support of 126 deputies in the 250-seat parliament is formed by May 14, Serbian President Boris Tadic will have to call new elections, Slobodan Vucetic, a former chief justice of the Constitutional Court said.

Under a constitutional rule, the Serbian parliament will be dissolved May 15 and new elections must be conducted by July 13. A new parliament will have to be constituted by Aug. 12, and lawmakers would have to approve a new government by Nov. 10, the Serbian news agency Beta said.
