MEXICO CITY, April 24 (UPI) -- Mexico City lawmakers voted Tuesday to legalize abortions in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, a landmark decision in the largely Roman Catholic country.

The capital's leftist mayor, Marcelo Ebrard, said he would sign the bill into law as soon as possible, El Universal newspaper reported online.

Conservative groups, the Catholic Church and anti-abortion activists in Mexico were adamantly opposed to the new law.

The office of President Felipe Calderon said it was opposed to the new law but would respect city's officials decision to pass it.
