NEW CASTLE, Ind., April 24 (UPI) -- An inmate uprising at the New Castle Correctional Facility in Indiana Tuesday left two prison employees injured.
Inmates in up to three cell houses took off their shirts and some began burning mattresses to defy guards about 2 p.m., the Indianapolis Star reported.
Indiana State Police were joined by local police, emergency squads and paramedics in helping correctional officials restore order at the medium-security prison within two hours.
One prison employee was knocked down and the second was treated for cuts and scraps, the Star said.
"The Indiana Department of Corrections immediately responded by mobilizing emergency squads, county police and Indiana State Police to the facility," the Indiana Department of Correction said in a statement.
Corrections Department Commissioner J. David Donahue said the disturbance was started by inmates from Arizona, who have been housed at the Indiana prison since March under a one-year, $6.1 million contract between the states, reported WTHR-TV in Indianapolis.
The 630 Arizona inmates at the state's only privately managed prison are expected to increase to about 1,200 inmates. The facility, run by the Florida-based GEO Group since 2005, has 2,416 beds.
