MOSCOW, April 22 (UPI) -- The celebration of Vladimir Lenin's birthday drew a crowd of 2,000 people to the Russian leader's mausoleum in Moscow's Red Square Sunday.

Members of the Communist Party of Russia and supporters brought wreaths and flowers to the mausoleum, where Lenin's embalmed body has been displayed since his 1924 death, to celebrate the leader's birth 137 years ago, RIA Novosti reported Sunday.

The presence of the mausoleum in Red Square has been a source of debate since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Communist Party members have resisted numerous calls for Lenin's body to be removed from the heart of the city and buried.
