Fighting kills 20 in Somali capital

MOGADISHU, Somalia, April 20 (UPI) -- Scores of people fled the Somali capital of Mogadishu Friday, a day after fighting between Ethiopian troops and insurgents killed at least 20 people.

Hospital officials said nearly 100 people were injured by gunfire on Thursday, the Shabelle Media Network reported.

Roads connecting the capital with southern areas of the country were closed as a security measure after a suicide bomber drove a small car into a former Somali military base occupied by Ethiopian soldiers. The network said no casualty figures had been released.

In late December, Ethiopian troops and the remnants of the Somali army battled to topple an Islamist group that took control of the government last June. The interim Somali government returned to a fragile power but Islamist rebels regrouped and fighting has intensified in Mogadishu and thousands of people have left the city on foot, the report said.
