Afghan, Pakistani troops clash

KABUL, Afghanistan, April 19 (UPI) -- Afghanistan said a clash between Afghan and Pakistani border troops Thursday began after Afghan troops tore down a fence erected by Pakistan.

Pakistan denied the clash was related to the fence, which it said is deep inside its territory, the BBC reported. A Pakistani military spokesman told the BBC the clashes, in which there were no casualties, started after one of its patrols came under fire.

The fence, and a plan to mine certain parts of the border area, were announced earlier this year by Pakistan as an anti-Taliban measure, the report said. Afghanistan opposes the plan, saying it will divide tribal families in the area and formalize the 1983 Durand Line border, which remains under dispute.

Pakistan said the fence plan is the only way to comply with international calls to stop Taliban insurgents based in Pakistan from mounting attacks inside Afghanistan.
