Suspended Pakistan judge issues challenge

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, April 18 (UPI) -- Pakistan Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry, whose suspension angered the nation, wants three of the five judicial council members hearing his case removed.

The judge's challenge in an Islamabad court saying the three are biased against him came as another public protest was organized against Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, the BBC reported Wednesday. The report said Wednesday's protest, however, was more low-key than in the past.

Musharraf's suspension of Chaudhry last month on allegations of abuse of powers has become a major political headache since the army chief took control in 1999 after a bloodless coup. The suspension continues to spark countrywide protests by lawyers, opposition parties and civil rights groups who say Musharraf is trying to suppress an independent judiciary.

In the court challenge, Chaudhry's lawyers also said the case should be heard in public instead of behind closed doors, the report said.
