Prodigy, 21, about to become doctor

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 17 (UPI) -- A shootout between rival drug gangs in Rio de Janeiro's notoriously violent slums left 19 people dead Tuesday.
The gun battle in the Morro da Mineira slum was reportedly over control of the drug trade in the neighborhood, O Globo TV reported.
Earlier this year, the Brazilian government sent federal police to Rio to assist local authorities in their effort to crack down on gang violence.
Rio officials have requested that the federal government send troops to the city, a request Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been reluctant to grant.
