BAGHDAD, April 16 (UPI) -- Radical Iraqi cleric Moqtada Sadr ordered his 32 members of parliament to withdraw from Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's coalition government Monday.
At a Baghdad news conference, lawmaker Nassar al-Rubaie said the group was pulling out as part of a push for U.S. troops to withdraw from the country, the Alalam Arabic Satellite TV network reported.
Sadr's political party is responsible for six ministries, which Rubaie said would be handed back to the government to administer.
Rubaie said Maliki had ignored Iraqi protesters who demonstrated a week ago in support of Sadr and demanded a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal.
"The main reasons are the prime minister's lack of response to the demands of nearly 1 million people in Najaf asking for the withdrawal of U.S. forces and the deterioration in security and services," he said.
Sadr's whereabouts is unknown. He disappeared soon after the U.S. military announced a joint security sweep of Baghdad, which is ongoing.
