Peace Corps worker missing in Philippines

MANILA, Philippines, April 16 (UPI) -- An intensive search is underway in the Philippines for a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer who has been missing for more than a week.

Julia Campbell, 41, of Fairfax, Va., disappeared April 8, the Manila Times reported Monday. Campbell last was seen in Battad in the Ifugao province.

She was reportedly starting a hiking trip that would take her through Banaue, police said. Battad is an unusual place for hikers to begin a trip because its highlands are rough with steep slopes, deep ravines and heavy fog pervades the area, police said.

The search for Campbell is being coordinated with the U.S. Embassy in Manila.

Campbell is one of 137 Peace Corps volunteers serving in the Philippines.
