Nigeria votes amid violence

ABUJA, Nigeria, April 15 (UPI) -- Some 52 people were reported killed in Nigeria as the country voted for Houses of Assembly members and governors in 36 states.

Suspected militants killed seven policemen and four soldiers Saturday in raids on two police stations in Mino Okoro and Elelenwo in Rivers State, Vanguard reported Sunday.

One of the slain civilians was thought to be the running mate of Rivers State gubernatorial candidate Samson Ingeregbara. He was killed during an attack on the candidate's house by suspected militants.

President Olusegun Obasanjo said the violence was not politically motivated and he and Maurice Iwu, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, described the voting as successful.

However, the Action Congress and the presidential candidate from the All Nigeria Peoples Party claimed the elections were plagued with irregularities. Many areas complained of receiving voting materials late and others reported they did not receive result sheets and suspected they were stolen.

Turnout for the elections was described as low in most polling places.
